There are reed switches,  and a magnet that trips these reed switches.  When the magnet passes over the switch it creates a static of sort.  In other words the magnet may have a white substance build up on them, which will need to be taken off.  You can either use sand paper or use a sharp knife to remove the white substance.   If one of  the reed switch has failed, there are several others that would still work and give a false reading.  If the annometer buckets are still turning, you will need to take down your station and remove this substance.  Do not forget to reseal the plastic housing halfs with silicone.  This happened to my station some time back.  I have been using the Dallas 1-wire system since it first came out.    http://garysch.home.radiks.net
