I've ported a lot of stuff to OS X. The kernel is based on CMU's
Mac, but the system libraries and userland stuff is an odd mix of
NetBSD and FreeBSD. Most stuff ports pretty easily.

I'm almost entirely Solaris/SPARC-based here as well. :-)

There may be some differences in the ioctl() calls for setting up
the serial port, but that's usually not too hard to deal with.
