That was how I read it. First thought is that a 2408 would be a possible
choice. You can configure it to do byte at a time input/output with a
strobe line. With a micro in between the rs232 drivers and the 2408 you
could probably glue something together. I don't recall seeing any ready
made solutions though.

I think he meant going the other way.
Assuming that was the case, what he needs is a 1-wire UART chip.
I dug around on the DalSemi web site and didn't see anything like
that, unfortunately.
